Traditional Memory
The traditional game of memory is played by laying out two decks of cards and finding the match to each card. This game challenges the memory because it requires players to remember where previous cards that they picked up several minutes ago are placed. With a large game of memory, the brain is really challenged. Children and adults alike can benefit from the memory-expanding game of traditional memory.
Simon
The game Simon is usually played on a board, or more recently, on a game console or computer. Simon is a game where the computer will play a series of sounds or colors, and the human player has to match that same pattern. The game gets progressively harder and harder until the human player can not remember the sequence. This game can be modified to play with two human players by having the first person make a sequence of sounds or moves and the second person copying them. The first person to forget the sequence loses.
Mahjong
Mahjong is a traditional Chinese game that helps focus the brain and increase memory. It is a difficult game to play in person because there are many small pieces, and they take a long time to stack up. However, there are many Internet versions of the game that require no set up and are just as good at improving memory and brain power. Squares are matched up according to the pattern on the top of the square in a certain order. If this order is not followed, then the player will be unable to win. Many versions of this game offer varying difficulties to challenge every level of player.
Memory Variations
The traditional game of memory can be modified into many different variations. One game that is often played at bridal or baby showers is to place a number of items onto a tray. Players are allowed to look at the tray for a certain amount of time, and then the tray is taken away. Players must then remember what items were on the tray. Memory can also be played with many different versions of cards and is often used to teach children animals, colors, shapes and letters.
