Highland Games Events
The Highland Games are famous in Scotland; kind of a Scottish version of track and field. One event, known as caber toss, involves tossing a large wooden pole (think telephone pole size.) Children can create their own version of the game by tossing a caber made of a carpet roll or wrapping paper roll stuffed with newspaper. The child who tosses the caber farthest wins.
Hammer throw is another Scottish Highland Games event. The "hammer" is not an actual hammer, but a heavy ball attached to a wire and handle. Children can simulate this game by creating a hammer from a length of yarn with a beanbag securely attached to one end. Children can swing the hammer around before tossing it to see who can make it fly the farthest.
Golf
Golf is a popular sport in Scotland and is particularly renowned in the town of Saint Andrews. Set up a miniature golf course outside (or inside if you have a large space such as a basement) for your children to practice golf. You can create hazards with piles of trash (called "rubbish" in Scotland.)
Outdoor Games
Outdoor games are popular with Scottish children. Sack races, relays involving passing an egg down the line with spoons, and pillow fights are Scottish favorites.
Lawn bowling is another popular pursuit; it involves rolling 5-inch balls ("bowls") over a flat lawn with the goal being to knock down a smaller ball (or "jack"). Children will enjoy setting up a lawn bowling course in the backyard.
