How to Change the Internal Battery of a SNES Game

As your Super Nintendo games age, you may notice that they don't allow you to save your progress as reliably as they used to. This is because these games contain an internal battery that lasts approximately 10 years, and this battery is responsible for ensuring that your save files remain intact. Knowing how to change these batteries will allow you to continue to play your favorite Super Nintendo games for years to come.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

      Wash your hands thoroughly.

    • 2

Place your Super Nintendo game so that it is laying face-up before you. Locate the two hexagon bolts on the two bottom corners of the game and use your 3.8mm security bit to remove them.

    • 3

Place your fingers around the front cover of your game and gently pull upward, exposing the backside of the game's board. Lift the game board away from the back cover of the game, being careful not to touch anything other than the edges.

    • 4

Locate the game's internal battery at the top left corner of the game board.

    • 5

Use your soldering iron to carefully pry away the connectors holding the battery in place. Depending on the game itself, the number of connectors may vary.

    • 6

Replace the defunct battery with a new one.

If you would like to solder the new battery back into place, you may do so. However, you also can tape it in place with electrical tape. To tape it, cut a two-inch piece of tape with your utility knife and place it underneath the bottom connector. Place the battery between the two connectors and firmly wrap the tape around it.

    • 7

Locate the two slots that are on the back cover of the game cart and place the game board back into them with the side containing the battery facing downward. Since the game board can slide only between the slots when it is in this position, you will not be able to slide it back in any other way.

    • 8

Place the front cover of the game back on, making sure the back cover is angled down and away from yourself for a more secure fit. Replace the two hexagon bolts.

    • 9

Shake your game gently to ensure the battery and game board are secure.
