Interactive Games for Irregular Verbs

Students who have trouble with irregular verbs can easily get behind in class in the event a tutor or in-class help is unavailable. Irregular verb games can help students overcome some troubles with these verbs and help them approach the subject material in a more fun way. Some online games through CommNet.com are available at any time (see Resources).
  1. Irregular Verbs Mad Lib

    • This online game found on CommNet.com is laid out like a mad lib, where a player has to fill in the correct verb with the verb given. There are three different paragraphs with different subjects that utilize the verbs. Once a player has all of the boxes filled in, a player can click the "submit application" or "clear answers" button at the bottom of the game. When a player submits answers, all correct answers will have a check mark next the box. If an answer is incorrect, a question mark will be displayed next to the corresponding answer. When "clear answers" is selected, all of the answers are erased.

    Irregular Verbs Javascript Game

    • This online game found on CommNet.com uses pop-up dialogue boxes to conduct a quiz, so be sure Javascript is installed on your computer. The game presents 10 questions that require a player to answer using the appropriate verb. As a player inputs answers, a player can view the list of correct and incorrect answers in the background. If a player inputs an incorrect answer, the game will display the correct verb. Once the quiz is complete, a list of the sentences, correct or incorrect answers and the correct verb are organized for a player to view and print if needed. The game also offers links for a chart of irregular verbs, the quiz list and a guide to grammar and writing. The resources section includes another version of this game with different sentences.

    Irregular Verbs Crossword Puzzle

    • This online crossword puzzle game found on CommNet.com features 56 different verbs to connect. A player begins by typing each word spelled out in the simple past tense or the past participle of the irregular verb in the clue. Each box will just contain one letter of the verb. After (or before) the puzzle is completed, a player has the option to "check my answers" or "show me a letter." If a player places an incorrect letter in a box (after hitting the "check my answers" button), the letter will be erased from the box for the player to insert the correct letter and submit the answers again.
