Cup Stacking Games

Cup stacking games appeal to kids of all ages. Games can be simple enough for toddlers to play or so advanced that kids can participate in actual tournaments. Whether you̵7;re looking for a party game, a way to improve your child̵7;s coordination or a game which has trophy-earning potential, cup stacking isn̵7;t a bad way to spend an afternoon.
  1. Cup Towers

    • This game pits players against one another to see who can build the highest tower using cups. Give each player the same number of cups (anywhere from 50 to 500, depending on the ambition and ability of the kids). Keep track of how high the tower is as you go. Either time the event and give children the option to try again if the tower should fall, or each player̵7;s turn is over as soon as their tower falls. Before the game begins, establish the rules of construction. Can the towers be built with a solid base (pyramid or skyscraper style) or does the tower need to be built on one line of cups (like a giant triangle)?

    Colored Cup Race

    • Buy the same number of plastic cups for each player (all the same size but in a different color for each player). Disposable cups work best, but plastic tumblers are okay too if you can get enough. To begin play, mix all the colors together and spread out all the cups on a table. When the game starts, players race to stack all their cups before the other players do. The fastest player wins.

    One-Handed Stack

    • Similar to the other cup stacking games, this one comes with a handicap. Players must build their stacks with one hand behind their back. To make it even more challenging, inform players they must keep their dominate hand out of play and see how coordinated they truly are.

    Sport Stacking

    • Started in the 1980̵7;s, sport stacking takes cup stacking to a whole new level. The idea is to stack and unstack cups as quickly as possible. Players don̵7;t stack any old way. Play involves stacking and unstacking in a specific sequence, generally using 12 cups. Participants in this organized sport use special cups which increase overall speed (cups come out of nesting stage faster and don̵7;t stick) and practice until they are almost unbelievably quick. This sport includes competitions and tournaments (complete with trophies) and has been featured on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
