Ideas for Family Picnic Games

Spending the weekend or your vacation in the company of your family requires food, fun, patience and creativity. Traveling to the park or lake for a picnic and sharing a meal is a good starter to this event. Enjoying a round of games following the meal provides a natural outlet for sibling rivalry, parental engagement and friendly competition. Kids of all ages benefit from the physical interaction and emotional bonding.
  1. Blindfolded Shoe Shuffle

    • Blindfolded Shoe Shuffle is appropriate for all ages. This game is best played by medium and larger groups of people. All players sit down in a circle and get blindfolded. They then all remove both shoes and fling them into a pile in the middle of the circle. One person is appointed "referee" and obligated to lead the game. Once all participants have their shoes off and in the middle, the ref mixes up the pile then steps out. He blows a whistle and all players race for the center on all fours searching for their shoes. The winner must find both of his own shoes using his senses of touch, scent and hearing and must get them back on his feet and secured.

    Fork Over the Chocolate

    • Fork Over the Chocolate is a dessert game best played by active participants who can move quickly and eat chocolate even faster. Dice, a chocolate bar, a knife, several forks, a pair of large gloves and various pieces of clothing are required. Players form a circle around various loose clothing pieces. Shirts, pants, dresses, shorts, hats, scarves and socks are all good options. One person starts the game by throwing the dice, followed by each person in turn. When someone throws a six, she runs to the center of the circle and puts on all the clothes as fast as she can. Then she grabs the knife and fork and using them as quickly as possible she cuts off a piece of the chocolate bar and eats it. Every piece she eats, she must first cut. This builds tension in that it slows down her overall progress. Game play continues by all the other players and when another player throws a six, the first player must put down the candy, take off the extra clothing and return to the circle. The winner of the game is the person who eats the last piece of chocolate.

    Sack Race

    • An old-fashioned sack race is always a good option for leveling the playing field between athletic types and less active individuals. People pair up in teams of two. Burlap potato bags or pillowcases are necessary. The group appoints a referee who blows a whistle to begin the game and then races to the finish line to announce the appropriate winner. Players each place one leg in the bag and hop from the start line to the finish line, working in tandem with their partner. A fun twist on this traditional game is that when even one person on the team falls down the pair must return to the start line and begin again.
