Family Games for Christmas & the Holidays

The holidays are a wonderful time for families to get together and spend some time playing games. Christmas and other holidays often get so busy that we forget to take the time to sit down and make special memories with the people we love. Start a family tradition of playing a few silly games each year in celebration of the holidays and you'll always have fond festive moments to look back on.
  1. Gift Tag Scavenger Hunt

    • Give each child in the family a secret code name for Christmas. Label Christmas presents with the code names so that the children don't know which presents are theirs. Hide a series of clues throughout the house leading to a final envelope that reveals whom each code name belongs to. Give the children one clue to begin with and let them take part in a scavenger hunt to get to their names. Give each clue a holiday theme, such as assigning a reindeer to each one until the final clue leads to Santa Claus. Once they complete the hunt, let them open their gifts (or one special gift). An alternative to this game could be a scavenger hunt that leads the participants to a hidden gift or stocking.

    Guess the Stocking Stuffer

    • Fill a stocking with distinctly shaped items. Include things such as a tie, lollipop, snowman figurine, Christmas ornament, bookmark and gift bow. Tie a string around the top, cinching the stocking to allow just enough room for players' hands. Pass the stocking around and give each player a piece of paper and pencil. Have them make a list of the items that they think they can identify. A player shouldn't say anything out loud while he has his hand in the stocking or share his thoughts until the game is over. Compare the lists once everyone has had a chance to feel around in the stocking. Provide small prizes for the player or players who get the most items correct, or let them keep the stocking stuffers.

    Secret Snowman

    • Make a small snowman from construction paper and affix a piece of double-sided tape to the back. Carefully stick the snowman to an unsuspecting family member's back. When that person finds the little snowman who's hitching a ride on her sweater, she must pass it on to another family member. Keep this game going throughout the day until the snowman has visited every member of the family at least once. Give awards at the end of the day to the "Sneakiest Sticker" and "Longest Visit with the Snowman." This game can be used for other holidays as well by incorporating different characters. Use cupid for Valentine's Day, a leprechaun on St. Patrick's day, a bunny for Easter or a turkey on Thanksgiving.
