Ideas for a Team-Building Photo Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger hunts are an effective way to not only build team unity, but also to help new employees learn their way around an office. Using photographs for clues can help team members visualize objects so that they will be easier to remember and locate in the future. Clues can be photographs of office supplies, people or locations. The idea is for team members to become more familiar with their surroundings and with one another to create synergy within the office.
  1. Office Supply Hunt

    • You can either have multiple teams "competing" against one another, or simply have one team working together. Give each team a photograph of an office supply. For example, if a photograph is a picture of a copy machine, the employees must locate the copy machine. Upon finding the copy machine, there is a photograph of another office supply. Working together, the team makes its way through the office, searching for clues, but also learning where office supplies are located. A good idea for the end of a scavenger hunt is to take a picture of the conference room or kitchen. Upon reaching their final destination, the employees celebrate with a company lunch, where they can continue to get to know one another.

    Personnel Hunt

    • Have an administrator take pictures of various staff members who are not participating in the scavenger hunt. Team members are given the first photograph and then must go find that person. Upon finding that person, the person provides a brief introduction and explains what her responsibilities are in the office. Team members associate that person with particular tasks, so that when things need to be done, they know which person to seek. After the introduction, the team members receive a photo of the next person they must hunt. Once the scavenger hunt is complete, the team members will have met key personnel in the office. At the end of the scavenger hunt, all team members and participating personnel meet for lunch.

    Key-Location Hunt

    • All industries have certain locations within the office that are critical to day-to-day operations. Some locations might be package drop-off locations, mail rooms and supply closets. While not critical in that nature, you can even include office restrooms or off-site locations where employees meet for happy hour on occasion. This particular scavenger hunt is best suited for the end of the workday, primarily because of the end result. A group of new employees is given a photograph of, say, the mail room. Since the locations may not all be self-explanatory, an administrator should accompany the team to explain the importance of each location. The final step in the scavenger hunt is a photo of an off-site restaurant. To celebrate the new employees, an email is sent out to notify other office employees of a happy hour at the off-site location. The new employees arrive at the happy hour, as their final destination, and continue to get to know one another as well as to acquaint themselves with established office employees.
