Free Indoor Structured Game Ideas for Elementary Children

Children in elementary school learn in a variety of ways, but especially through play. It is no secret that when kids are having fun, they tend to learn new things and develop new skills more quickly. Children love games for this reason, and especially if they are outdoor games. But, what do you do if the weather is bad outside? There̵7;s no need to worry, because there are plenty of structured games that can be played indoors.
  1. Fun with Letters

    • This game gets children to explore their surrounding environment, and work under pressure while reinforcing the alphabet. Give each child a piece of paper and a pencil. Have them write the letters of the alphabet down the left-hand column. Then, give the children three to five minutes, depending on their age, to find something in the room that starts with each letter of the alphabet. They must find the items in the order of the alphabet. No skipping letters. When the timer goes off, the child who has listed the most things without skipping a letter wins.

    What is It?

    • This game helps children pull information from memory. A few days before the game, take a digital camera and go around and take close-up pictures items around the house. You want pictures that make the objects difficult, but not impossible to identify. You need one picture per child minimum. Give each child a piece of paper and pencil. Give each child a picture and give them 20 to 30 seconds to look at it. When time is up they have to write down their answer and pass the picture to the person on their right. Repeat until all the pictures have been around. The child with the most correct answers wins.

    Name that Job

    • This game helps children use their imagination and creativity to communicate without words. Each child picks the job they want to do when they grow up. Each child then has to come up to the front of the class and act out their career choice. The other children have to guess what he/she is. A point system can be used to determine the winner, however, it can be played just for fun as well.
