Rules for Yard Darts

First introduced during the 1950s, lawn darts has been a popular outdoor game ever since. The original lawn darts had metal tips, but lawn dart games sold in stores today contain plastic darts with weighted ends. Plastic lawn darts are safer than the older, metal-tipped darts, but the rules for playing are the same no matter what type of dart you use. Like all outdoor games, the rules for playing lawn darts are very straightforward.
  1. Setting up the Game

    • The game components are four darts and two plastic rings. Four players divide into teams of two and select a set of colored darts. The rings are spaced anywhere from 20 feet to 35 feet apart, depending on the available playing area and the skill of the players.

    Playing the Game

    • Two players, one from each team, stand by a plastic ring and take turns throwing the darts to the opposite ring. When throwing the darts, the players can alternate throwing one dart at a time, or one player can throw both darts before allowing the opposing team member to throw. Play continues from the other end with the other team members throwing from the other end.

    Scoring

    • The object of the game is to launch a dart so that the weighted tip lands inside the plastic ring. A team scores one point for every throw that lands within the ring. Opposing darts within the ring cancel each other out. For example, if team A's darts both land in the ring while team B only has one dart land in the ring, team A would only score one point, since team B's dart canceled the second dart from team A.
