How to Create Dice Word Puzzles

Simple homemade puzzles and games using lettered dice are a great way to keep kids entertained at home or on the road. By constructing a simple set of letter covered dice, you and your family can come up with endless word puzzles and games for hours of creative fun.

In a Dice Word Race, each player rolls their set of dice and races to make the biggest word as fast as possible. In Dice Word Jumble, one player gives the other players the correct letters to spell a word, but the letters are given out of order. The other players must race to arrange their dice into the word. For smaller children, they can roll the dice and try to make three-letter words to practice their reading, or you can give them three letters out of order and a clue and then let them puzzle the word out. Players can also make up their own dice word puzzles and games to play.

Instructions

  1. Making Dice

    • 1

Make two vowel die by affixing one of the letter stickers "a," "e", "i," "o," "u," and "y" to each side of two of the wooden cubes. This ensures that each player will always have at least two vowels to work with and makes word dice puzzles and games more fun to play.

    • 2

Affix to all the remaining letters from one of the alphabet sticker sheets to the remaining five wooden cubes. Affix the stickers randomly to the different die. From the second sheet of alphabet stickers, use "t," "n," "s," "r," "h," "l," "d," "c," "m," and "f." These letters are the top ten consonants used in the English language, so having doubles of each will make more words possible with each roll. As much as possible, try not to have a letter appear twice on a single dice.

Make multiple sets of dice for multi-player games.
