Raffles, or games of chance in which money is paid, are illegal in the states of Hawaii and Kansas. Tennessee has very strict laws about raffles as well. If in doubt, check with your local authority where the tickets will be sold and where the prizes will be awarded.
Features
License applications normally require contact information about the group holding the raffle, as well as contact information for the person in charge of running the raffle.
Documentation
Some states, such as Michigan require a specific list of the times the prizes were given away. Other states may require information the origin of the prizes, and who donated gifts.
Application Fees
Most states charge an application fee. Some states, such as Michigan, charge a different fee based upon the value of the prize.
Application Time
Some states, such as Iowa, require 30 days between when the application is approved and when the tickets may be sold.
