Rules for Corn Toss Game

The corn toss game is known by many names: Bean bag toss, corn toss, soft horseshoes and cornhole are a few. The American Cornhole Association (ACA), the largest cornhole/corn toss organization in the country, which was begun to promote the game, educate players and standardize rules, spells out official game regulations on its website.
  1. Court Layout

    • According to the ACA, a corn toss court should be a rectangular shape that's 10 feet wide and at least 45 feet long. The court must have two corn platforms, two designated pitcher's boxes and foul lines.

At each end of the court are the pitcher's boxes, which measure 4 feet by 3 feet on each side of the corn platforms. Game players must stay inside these boxes when pitching.

There are two types of foul lines: Open adult play and junior play. Adult play foul lines are imaginary lines, parallel to the front of the corn toss platform, that are 30 feet from the beginning of the hole in the opposite corn toss platform. For junior play, the foul lines are 21 feet from the beginning of the hole in the opposite platform.

Indoor courts should be set up the same as outdoor corn toss courts, but must have at least 12 feet of vertical space to prevent obstructions.

    Equipment

    • The corn toss game requires two pieces of equipment: a platform and corn bags.

The cornhole platform is a 48-inch by 42-inch rectangle made of half-inch plywood. The hole in the platform should have a 6-inch diameter and centered 9 inches from the top of the platform and 12 inches from each side of the platform. The bottom of the platform should rise 2.5 inches from the ground, while the top should be 12 inches from the ground.

The corn bags need to be at least 6 inches by 6 inches and filled with approximately 2 cups of corn.

    Rules of the game

    • A corn toss match is broken down into innings, during which each contestant pitches all four corn bags.

The game begins by each contestant alternating pitching a corn bag on each side until all four bags on each side have been tossed. (If it is a doubles game, the partners alternate throwing the bags.) The game players can throw the bag from anywhere within the pitcher's box and must throw it within 20 seconds of entering the pitcher's box.

    Fouls

    • Any bag declared a foul is worth zero points and must be removed from the court before any more bags are thrown. Some reasons for foul bags include a bag that is thrown after a player stepped outside the pitcher's box; a bag not thrown within the 20-second time limit; a bag that hits the court or ground before landing on the corn toss platform; or a bag that strikes an object unrelated to game player, such as a wire or plant.

    Scoring

    • The game is scored depending on where the corn bags land. "Corn bag in-the-hole" means the bag was thrown into or comes to rest inside of the hole in the platform, and earns the player three points. "Corn bag in-the-count" means the bag came to rest anywhere on the platform except in the hole and has a value of one point. The bag cannot touch the ground before hitting the platform, or else it's worth zero points. "Corn bag out-of-the-count" is a bag that lands anywhere other than the platform or in the hole and isn't worth any points. This includes bags that are considered to be a foul.

In one inning, corn bags in-the-hole and corn bags in-the-count cancel each other out, therefore no points are awarded. Only non-canceled bags are counted for the score.

    Length of the game

    • When one contestant (or team, for doubles play) has reached 21 points by the end of an inning, the game is over. If there is a tie at the end of an inning, another inning is played until a team has a higher score.

If one team scores seven points or more at the end of one inning before the other team scores any points, the game is considered a "skunk" and the team with seven or more points wins.
