How to Choose a Ferrule Cue Stick

Purchasing a cue stick is as individual a decision as buying a new pair of jeans--it's all about fit and feel. It is best to purchase your cue stick from a store that specializes in billiards and billiards supplies so you can get the feel of the stick before you purchase it.
If a stick does not feel comfortable to you, you should not buy it.
The ferrule of a cue stick holds the cue tip in place and most often is made of ivory, metal, carbon fiber or resin-based materials. It takes on the whole burden of the impact when the cue stick meets the ball.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit shops in your town that specialize in the sale of billiard supplies. Experiment with cue sticks in a variety of lengths and weights to determine which is the most comfortable to hold. Cue sticks normally weigh between 18 and 21 oz. and measure anywhere from 12 to 14 mm in length.

    • 2

After you have selected which weight and length cue stick feels most comfortable to you, select a few different sticks that match you specifications from different manufacturers. Make sure the cue stick's shaft is completely straight. Where the ferrule joins the shaft should be smooth. Make sure the diameter of the ferrule is equal to that of the cue shaft.
Each of the cue stick's finishes should be without bubbles and the wrap at the end of the stick should not be frayed, loose, or discolored.

Following your visual inspection, hit a few balls with the cue sticks you have selected to see how they feel in your hand. You are testing for both accuracy in your shots and the feel of the stick.

Purchase the stick that feels the best to you.
