Determine the event that will be played at the tournament. Choose a game that you already have the equipment for to alleviate the need for additional purchases. Examples can include a pool tournament, a bean bag tournament or a poker tournament. Or, create competition using video games.
Print out rules for the game. Because each game in your tournament may feature exceptions are additional house rules, use a printed sheet for reference by all players.
Decide where to hold the tournament. For smaller games you can have players at your house, while outdoor games can be played in public parks. Check with friends to see if they have room for a tournament to keep the cost at nothing.
Invite the players to your tournament. This can be as simple as sending an email or making a phone call. Include players of several different skill sets, which can be combined to form balanced teams.
Determine whether their will be a prize for the winner. A free tournament should not force players to pay an entry fee, so the prize can be creative such as the winner being allowed to hold the next tournament.
Create a tournament bracket for organized events. These brackets can be created and printed online or can be hand drawn on a large poster-board to be displayed during the tournament. Small scale events such as a poker game doesn't need a bracket, since players will be eliminated when they are out of chips.
Encourage tournament players bring food and drink to share during long events, which will keep your cost down and the cost to players minimal.
