How to Shoot Dice

"Shooting dice" means rolling a pair of cubes in a betting game. Gamblers bet on which numbers--from one to six--will appear on the dice. The game is about probability. There's no strategy involved, no way to shoot or "throw" the dice that would result in a specific number. However, gamblers should know good shooter's etiquette, especially when they're playing at a commercial casino.

Things You'll Need

  • Pair of six-sided dice with each die having numbers 1-6 appearing as "dots"
  • Long table, minimum 10 feet, or other surface, with a back wall for "bouncing" the dice

Instructions

    • 1

Set one die on top of the other with the number three making a "V" shape.

    • 2

Grip the stacked dice between the thumb and either your middle or index finger. Determine which grip feels more natural and comfortable.

    • 3

Throw for the dough. Keep your hand as close to the table as possible, make a forward motion with your arm allowing the dice to roll out across your open fingers. Allow for a little "air" time before the dice hit the table and roll to the "bounce" wall. Keeping your hand low will prevent the dice from leaving the table.

Another option: Position your hand with your knuckles facing the table and toss as if you're pitching a softball. This should produce practically no backspin. Your bent elbow will face the back wall and your fingers will face up and toward the back wall all the way through the toss.

Another option: Position your hand with your knuckles facing the ceiling. The arm motion starts retreating to the wall opposite the back and then moves forward. As the arm moves extending forward, the dice are released by opening the hand with the knuckles still facing toward the ceiling,

Another option: Position your hand so when you move it backward, curling it toward you, your knuckles face the back wall. When you move your hand forward, your knuckles move to face the table surface as the hand opens, allowing the dice to roll off the tip of the fingers.
