Fun Driving Games

Road trips can be long and boring, at least until the destination is reached. Fortunately there are many fun games that can be played that will fuel creativity while effectively killing time. They can be played with several other passengers, or alone for the lonely driver. Additionally, these games can be competitive or casual, whichever fits the mood.
  1. State License Plates

    • Best for long trips, players can either work as a team to spy license plates from as many states as possible (including Canadian provinces, the District of Columbia and even Mexican states) or play against each other competitively. It is best to keep a written list of plates to verify what has and has not already been called.

    License Plate Words

    • For those who enjoy a linguistic challenge, players can compete against each other to formulate the best word from the letters on a license plate. If keeping score, each letter of a word is worth a point. Award five extra points if the letters are used in order. Add another bonus point if the word does NOT begin with the first letter of the plate.

    ABCs

    • When it gets too dark to see out the window, groups of two or more may play any variation of the alphabet game. A general topic is chosen (such as cities, animals or rock groups), and players take turns naming something in that category. The first player must name something that begins with the letter A, the second player names something that begins with B, and so on. If a player fails to name something, they are out. The last player remaining wins.

    Name That Tune

    • There are two ways to play this classic game. One method is to have somebody hum, whistle or sing part of a song. Songs can be broken down into categories (think Beatles, 1970s or Disney soundtracks), if necessary. A second way to play is to use the radio. For an added challenge, press the scan or seek button to arrive at random radio stations.

    Scavenger Hunt

    • This one takes some preparation, but make a list of things to be found while driving. Examples include a firetruck, a one-way sign, a silo, a white horse or an 8-story building. Make the list specific to the region you are traveling through. For example, don't list a llama farm on a trip through the city.
