Water Relay Games for Kids

Relays are a great way to engage large groups of kids in outdoor games. They encourage teamwork and participation by everyone. During the summer, relays that involve water can help keep kids cool and avoid heat exhaustion.
  1. Bucket Brigade

    • For this activity, participants should be organized into teams of about five kids each. Each team needs two large buckets and each team member will need one small cup. These cups should be the same size for all participants. Place one bucket beside the starting lineup for each team. Each team should place its other bucket along a designated "bucket line" several yards away. The goal is for each team to successfully transfer the water from the bucket-line container into the starting-line bucket. At the designated sound, one team member at a time will run to the full bucket, fill the small cup, run back to the start line, then dump the cup into the empty bucket. Once each runner has finishing emptying the small cup, the next team member may proceed. There are two ways of winning: the team that transfers all of the water from one bucket to the other wins, or you may require all of the teams to finish emptying their buckets and then determine the winner based on how much water each team transferred.

    Water Gauntlet

    • This game requires several straight-streaming or spinning sprinklers set low enough that participants can jump over the water stream. Members of relay teams have to complete a sprinkler obstacle course, jumping over sprinkler streams before tagging the next member to run the water gantlet. In this case, the team whose members all complete the course will win, although judges may take "dryness" into consideration in a virtual tie.

    Water Toss

    • This game is ideal for large teams. Each team receives two buckets. Begin by having one team bucket filled with water (not too heavy), several yards away from the starting line (similar to the original set-up for Bucket Brigade, but you may want start/bucket lines to be closer together). Leave the empty bucket at the starting line. One team member will run toward the filled bucket. Simultaneously, the next team member in line will pick up the empty bucket. The first team member will fling the water out of the full bucket and the person holding the empty bucket will attempt to catch the water. The original thrower will then run back to the starting line, carrying the now-empty bucket and hand it off to the next person. The team member who caught the water will carry his now-full container to the bucket line and toss the water to the next team member. The team whose members all complete their turns first wins. Due to the likelihood that some teams will miss their throws, keep a large container of water or hose handy for refilling. The team member who missed the catch must refill the bucket before proceeding to the throw line.
