Fun Youth Group Activities

Becoming a member of a youth group is a great way for kids to experience a sense of community and belonging. No matter what type of group, there are many activities that will introduce and engage all members.
  1. Name Game

    • This activity helps members of a newly formed youth group learn names, while having fun at the same time. Standing in a circle, the leader introduces herself first, stating her name and a food that begins with the same first letter as her name. For example, "My name is Katie, and I like Kalamata olives." Each youth in turn must introduce himself or herself, and repeat the names and favorite foods of the people before them, in order. This activity serves as an effective icebreaker and can get pretty funny with the different foods the kids come up with. Toward the end, group members might have a hard time reciting all the names that came before, so encourage teamwork by having everyone help recite.

    Sit Down

    • This action game is a way for youth group members to learn more about one another. Prior to meeting, the leader should make a list of statements that begin with "Sit down if... ." Feel free to tailor the questions based on the type of youth group, such as religious, community involvement, etc. Have everyone stand in a circle and take turns reading the questions to the group. The last person standing is the winner and gets to choose the next activity.

    Human Knot

    • This activity requires participation, teamwork, and critical thinking from all members. The leader should instruct everyone to stand tightly together. Some people can have their backs to the group, some can be turned sideways, and some can fully face the center. Each person puts both hands out and randomly grabs the hands of another member, creating a giant knot. Then, tell the youths to untangle themselves, without letting go of hands. This game requires a lot of communication among members and can be a great icebreaker for newly formed youth groups.
