Baggo Rules

The game of bean-bag toss, or cornhole, started in the Midwest in the late 1940s. People cut holes in pieces of plywood and tried to toss 1-pound bags into them from a variety of distances. Baggo was developed to standardize the equipment and rules. It can be played by two or four people.
  1. Equipment

    • Baggo includes two game boards; eight bean bags, four of two contrasting colors; a distance regulator; and a built-in scorekeeper.

    Where to Play

    • Baggo can be played inside or outside, as long as there's a enough flat surface area and overhead space. You need an area at least 10 feet wide and 30 feet long and at eight feet of clear space above the area.

    Setup

    • The boards should be placed apart from each other at distances dependent on the age of the players. For players 13 and older, set them 20 feet apart. For players 9 to 12, set the boards 15 feet apart. For players between 5 and 8, put the boards 12 feet apart. Set the boards 8 feet apart for younger children.

    Play

    • Players stand to the sides of the game boards and cannot step past the front of the board. In singles, each player throws four bags. In doubles, each throws two. The goal is to get the bags in the hole on the opposite board or have them land on the game surface. Opposing players take turns throwing until all eight bags have been tossed. This constitutes one round. Any bag that touches the ground at any point or is thrown out of turn is disqualified.

    Scoring

    • A bag in the hole is worth three points. A bag that lands on the board surface is worth one point. Only one team can score per round. The score is calculated by subtracting the lower-scoring team's points from the higher scoring team's points. For example, if Team A lands a bag in the hole and two on the surface and Team B only lands a bag in the hole, Teams A scores two points that round. Rounds continue until a team reaches 21 points or gains a lead of 11-0.
