How to Make a Tangram Right Triangle

A tangram is a Chinese puzzle using seven differently-shaped pieces to create various forms, both mathematical and artistic. The shapes are cut from one large square and when placed in the right formation, re-create that square. Apart, the pieces include two large triangles, one medium and two small triangles, all of which are isosceles. The final two pieces are a medium-size parallelogram and a small square. All seven pieces can be arranged to form a single right triangle with one 90 degree angle.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the small square down first and set it to the bottom left corner.

    • 2

Place one of the smaller triangles on top of the square with the right angle to the bottom left. The left side will form a straight line going up.

    • 3

Place a large triangle on top of the small triangle, arranged in exactly the same way. The right angle will be in the bottom left corner; only the bottom left corner of the large triangle will be touching the top left corner of the small triangle.

    • 4

Slide the medium triangle between the small and large triangles. The longest side will be against the bottom of the large triangle.

    • 5

Fit the parallelogram against the square and medium triangle. A short side of the parallelogram will be against the right side of the square and a long side will be against the medium triangle.

    • 6

Insert the small triangle on the bottom of the parallelogram. The longest side of the small triangle will be against the bottom side of the parallelogram.

    • 7

Put the final large triangle piece on the bottom right side. Turn the longest side of the triangle to the upper right, angling 45 degrees towards the bottom right.
