Cut a 1/4-inch thick 5-ply board to the length and width measurements of the picture chosen to make the jigsaw puzzle. Pictures on a medium thickness paper, such as calendars or card stock, are best. Thin paper, such as magazine pictures, will rip when cut. Thicker paper will chip when cut. The size of the picture you choose is up to you. Because of their size, more difficult puzzles can be made from larger pictures. A small picture is good for a present for a child.
Sand the edges of the newly cut board until smooth. Choose either mahogany or birch because these two types of wood have a smoother grain.
Spray the plywood board with 3M spray adhesive. Make sure to spray the entire board in accordance with the spray adhesive directions found on the bottle.
Place the picture on the plywood board slowly. Use the ruler to smooth down the picture to keep any air bubbles or wrinkles out of the picture.
Mark the puzzle piece lines onto the picture with chalk. The shapes are strictly the puzzle maker's choice. For children's puzzles, larger pieces that are easy for little hands to handle with larger nobs on the sides are best. The puzzle pieces for adults are usually smaller and more intricate or similar in design to confuse the person putting the puzzle together. However, any shape, size, length, width or style of pieces is acceptable.
Cut out the puzzle pieces with the scroll saw slowly and carefully because the scroll saw blades tend to break if the board is pushed into it too hard. Set aside each piece as it is cut off the main plywood board.
Sand the puzzle pieces gently to maintain the specific shapes. This is your scroll saw jigsaw puzzle.
