How to Make a Wooden Pyramid Puzzle

A wooden pyramid puzzle makes a great gift or display item. Making these puzzles yourself adds a little extra touch to the experience of puzzle solving. Puzzles have been around for thousands of years. They've even been found in Egyptian tombs from 2000 to 1000 B.C. Creating your own puzzle to keep on display is not only a way of keeping your mind sharp, it also helps you keep a small part of human history alive.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the middle top of four consecutive sides and the center of the top of the 6-by-6 inch wooden block. Draw two straight lines diagonally down the sides of the block to each corner forming triangles. This serves as your pattern for carving out a pyramid.

Use a saw to cut out the pyramid following these lines.

    • 2

Mark several lines along the cut out pyramid shape. These will serve as the pieces of your puzzle pyramid. Keep in mind that your pyramid will need to remain stable when you've placed the puzzle pieces together again. A horizontal base piece will help ensure the stability of the pyramid. Feel free to create curved pieces or pieces that bend and twist, as long as they fit back together again.

Use a saw to cut out the pieces.

    • 3

Sand all pieces of the pyramid puzzle lightly. Too much sanding and the pieces won't fit together properly. Make all sides flat and even.

    • 4

Apply a light coating of stain to the pieces as a final touch. To provide a hint for the puzzle solvers, you can opt to only coat the sides of the pieces that will face the outside of the pyramid. Place the pieces together and put it on display or have someone solve it.
