How to Make a Puzzle Storage Tube

Jigsaw puzzles are a great way to entertain children during a rainy afternoon or to put together yourself when you want to relax. The problem is that large-scale jigsaw puzzles take up a lot of room and are difficult to put away without ruining the work you have already done with them. One solution is to make a puzzle mat that can be rolled up into a tubeand store the puzzle until you can work on it again.

Things You'll Need

  • Felt fabric
  • Matching thread
  • Recycled cardboard gift wrapper
  • 2 Velcro strips
  • Sewing machine
  • Pins

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the felt fabric so one end is 5 inches longer than the roller tube while the other is the same size as the tube. Cut two strips from the scraps to cover the ends of the roller.

    • 2

Put the roller on top of the larger cut piece of fabric. Roll the fabric over the roller tube and pin it in place.

    • 3

Remove the roller tube. Sew a seam across the pinned area with the sewing machine, making sure to remove the pins as you sew. This creates a pocket for the tube.

    • 4

Wrap the small pieces of felt around the edges of the roller. Glue them with the hot glue gun. Fold them inside the tube and glue them again.

    • 5

Slide the roller tube into the pocket.

    • 6

Roll the mat up and attach the Velcro straps.

    • 7

Unroll the mat when you want to work on a puzzle. Put the puzzle pieces onto the mat. When you are ready to put it away, roll the mat up and secure it with the Velcro straps.
