How to Make a Wooden Tango Puzzle

Tangos, also known as tangrams, are puzzles that are composed of a given set of triangles and parallelograms. These triangular and quadrilateral tiles can be arranged to create thousands of unique shapes, including silhouettes of people and animals. The tango tile set derives from Chinese furniture design during the Song Dynasty and it has developed into one of the most popular tools for exploring geometry and patterns. Though tango tiles can be purchased from toy shops and bookstores, some people may prefer to make a set of wooden tangos for a gift or personal use.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

First, draw a square with sides measuring 4 inches to 10 inches. Use a builder̵7;s square and straightedge to make sure all corners of the square are right angles (90 degrees).

    • 2

Next, bisect the square by drawing a straight line from the square̵7;s bottom-left corner to its diagonal, opposite corner.

    • 3

After the square has been bisected, find the midpoint of the bottom and right edges of the square. This can be accomplished by using a ruled straightedge.

    • 4

Now that the midpoints of the two edges have been found, draw a diagonal line connecting the two midpoints.

    • 5

Again, bisect the square by drawing a line from the upper-left corner of the square toward the lower-right corner but do not continue the line beyond the intersection with the line that connects the two midpoints drawn in Step 4.

    • 6

Using a compass, draw a circle with its center at the intersection of the two long, diagonal bisections. The other leg of the compass should be placed at the intersection of the midpoint diagonal, given in Step 4, and the bisection, given in Step 5.

    • 7

The circle̵7;s intersection with the first bisection, from Step 2, will be used to draw the remaining pieces.

    • 8

After the circle has been drawn, draw a line from the midpoint of the square̵7;s bottom edge to the circle̵7;s lower-left intersection with the bisection from Step 2.

Draw a line from the intersection of the line between the midpoints (Step 4) and the circle̵7;s upper-right intersection with the bisection from Step 2.

    • 9

Clean up the stray marks and construction lines and cut the pieces, starting with the lower-left triangle. Follow the order in which the remainder of the tiles were drawn.
