How to Create Your Own Puzzle

The first jigsaw puzzle appeared in 1760, and the first cardboard puzzle was introduced in the late 1800s. In the 1930s, puzzles became more intricate and difficult as hype caught up with the popular culture. Puzzles may have started off as an educational tool used by children, but now they are just as popular with adults as their younger counterparts. A unique feature of the puzzle, whether homemade or purchased at the store, is that they are recyclable--they can be used again and again for countless hours of enjoyment.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the outline of your puzzle onto the cardboard using a dark-colored marker. A basic puzzle shape is a rectangle or square, but you can make your puzzle in any shape you want.

    • 2

Draw or paint the design of your choice within the outline. Easy design ideas include landscapes, portraits, animals and plants. Allow children to draw a picture of family or a self portrait, or help them write the alphabet or draw their favorite animal. Don't leave too much of the bare cardboard showing.

    • 3

Let the paint and marker ink dry. Cut the puzzle along the outline shape.

    • 4

Turn the puzzle over and draw a puzzle design on the backside using a fine-tip marker. The more intricate the design, the harder it will be to put together.

    • 5

Cut the puzzle along the lines you drew on the backside of the cardboard.

    • 6

Store your homemade puzzle in a plastic storage bag labeled with the puzzle's name.
