Find good deals on puzzles through online auction sites. Read the item descriptions carefully to ensure you're bidding on "unopened" puzzles or those that the seller guarantees are complete.
Sift through the toy bins at dollar stores to find smaller puzzles or versions with a fewer number of pieces for kids. Although some may be thinner than pricier models, they're just as fun to solve. Also check the clearance bins of toy and discount stores since puzzles often go on clearance when the characters they feature lose popularity.
Check yard sales and flea markets for older puzzles. Be aware that they may be in bad condition and missing a few pieces, which may make the puzzle more challenging for you but more frustrating for kids.
Solve free jigsaw puzzles online. Choose an available design (some websites will even let you upload your own photos) and specify the number of pieces. You'll have all of the challenge, but no mess cluttering your table as you work on the puzzle.
Double the value of any jigsaw puzzles you buy by creating your own puzzle on the back. Solve the puzzle and flip it over. Print a photo or piece of clip art on a piece of paper the same size as the puzzle. Affix it to the back of the puzzle with spray adhesive, then flip it back over and go over the lines between the pieces with a sharp craft knife.
