Games to Identify Angles in Geometry

Geometry is the mathematical study of the properties of shapes. There are two types of geometry: plane geometry and solid geometry. Plane geometry deals with flat shapes, such as circles and triangles, while solid geometry looks at complex, three-dimensional shapes, including prisms and spheres. In plane geometry, students learn about triangles and their angles. Rather than rote memorization of the different types of triangles, use games to help stimulate mathematical learning in a fun and positive way.
  1. Angle Bingo

    • Bingo is a versatile classroom game that can be easily modified for almost any subject, including the study of angles. This game requires specially made bingo cards with pictures of triangles instead of numbers. Go online and find a bingo card template, print it out and draw the triangles in the blank squares. To play angle bingo, the caller chooses a bingo letter and a corresponding triangle type. The first student who has one full line and calls out "bingo" is the winner for that round. Angle bingo is a fun way for students to visually identify the different types of triangles.

    Angle Coloring Pages

    • Since angles are very prominent in our daily lives, it is easy to identify angles in almost any picture. Find a coloring page of a scene with lots of straight lines and ask your students to mark all of the angles they see in the picture. Pictures of buildings and other structures often contain many straight lines and angles. Use a different colored marker to identify each triangle type. This exercise helps students learn how to identify various angles within a more complex picture.

    Scavenger Hunt

    • Angles are all around us -- wherever two lines intersect, they form an angle. Since angles can be found almost anywhere, it is very easy to create an angle-themed scavenger hunt. Send your students out into the school yard and ask them to identify five of each type of angle. Have them draw the angle on a sheet of paper with a description of where the angle is located. This game helps students learn to identify angles in their everyday environment and understand their basic concepts.

    Fill in the Blanks

    • There is a lot of terminology associated with the study of triangles and angles. Words, such as acute and obtuse, are new terms that are sometimes difficult to remember. To familiarize students with the various terms and definitions associated with angles, create a fill in the blank game. Fill in the blank sheets are easy to make yourself with a word processing program. Simply replace key words in a sentence with blanks for the answers. Divide the class into teams and have them fill out their sheets. The first team to correctly fill in all of the blanks wins a prize. Once the sheets have been filled in, review them with the class to ensure that everyone knows the correct answers.
