Paper
Print pictures of squares for the children to color. Give them white sheets of paper and have them draw squares all over the sheet of paper. Tell them to draw small, medium and large squares. Another idea is to have them make square garland. Have them cut several squares and poke a hole on both sides of the square. Help the children use fishing line to tie the squares together to make square garland to hang in the classroom.
Hunt
Create a square hunt by hiding several construction paper squares in the classroom. Have the children hunt for the squares, and the child who finds the most squares wins the game. Challenge the children by hiding other shapes along with the squares. Tell them that they can only hunt for the squares. Allow two children to compete at a time. When you say ̶0;Go,̶1; two children must search the classroom for a square. The first child to find a square wins a small prize. Tell the children they can find anything in the classroom that is a square, such as a square notepad cube or block.
Clay
Give the children self-hardening clay to mold a square. Allow the squares to dry overnight, and let the children paint the squares the next day. Children can paint the squares using acrylic paint, and use them for games in the classroom or to take home. If you do not have clay, the children can use Play-Doh instead. Use the squares to play a game of memory. Be sure you have two of each color square, and place the squares on a table. Cover each square with a small cup, and play a game of memory. One player will remove two cups. If the squares match, he keeps the pair and goes again. If they do not match, the play moves to the next player. The player with the most squares at the end of the game wins.
Activities
Use a shape cube block to teach children the shape of a square. The block contains holes with different shapes. Have each child take turns placing the square block through the square hole. Draw a house on a chalkboard with square windows, a triangle roof, round doorknobs and a square chimney. Have the children point out all the squares on the house.
