How to Make a Big Fort in a House With Blankets, Pillows & Chairs

Entertain your children on a cold or rainy day by building an indoor fort. Use blankets and chairs to create a cozy, enclosed space especially for them. With a little imagination, the makeshift fort can become a tent, cave, wigwam, castle, or clubhouse. Let your children play make-believe games inside the fort or use it as a reading area or as a place to take their naps. Climb inside the fort with your children to spend quality time with them while making memories.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a large, open area in a room of your home where you want the fort to go. Spread out a large blanket on the floor over this area to mark the spot for the fort.

    • 2

Place chairs around the perimeter of the blanket. Position each chair with its back inward against the blanket and its seat facing outward. Space the chairs out evenly around the blanket.

    • 3

Spread one to two large blankets over the backs of the chairs to create a ceiling for the fort. Join the edges of the blankets that run down the center of the fort with clothespins. Turn the joined blankets so that a corner falls over the space between two of the chairs. This will be the entrance to the fort, with the blanket acting as the door.

    • 4

Pull on the edges of the blanket ceiling to make it taught over the back of the chairs. Place a book on top of the portion of the blanket's edge that rests on each chair seat to weigh it down and keep the ceiling high and tight.

    • 5

Carry pillows into the fort for seats or to use for lounging. Stock the fort with a flashlight, storybooks, snacks and games.
