DIY No-Cook Play Dough

Making your own play dough at home can mean the difference between spending a lot of money on your child's entertainment and saving your dollars. Learning how to make your own play dough can also benefit your child, because you can quickly and easily replace the play dough, which often dries out. Plus, you may find that your child enjoys helping to make the dough almost as much as playing with it. With a spoon in hand, an apron for protection and a few ingredients, you can master your own no-cook play dough.

  • 8 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 4 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 2 cups salt
  • 4 cups boiling water

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the flour into a bowl. Add the cream of tartar, oil, salt and water. Kids can help with everything except the boiling water.

    • 2

Mix the ingredients with a spoon until well incorporated. Place the dough onto a cutting board or counter top.

    • 3

Divide the dough into eight sections. When it's cool enough to touch, press a dent with your finger in the top of each section.

    • 4

Add a couple of drops of food coloring to each dent. Your child can help with this step and may want to choose a color, or combine colors to get a new shade. Squish each section together until the food coloring is well incorporated.

    • 5

Store the play dough in a plastic container, plastic bag or plastic wrap.
