Outdoor Games Relating to Animals for Four Year Olds

Fascination with animals starts at an early age. As a teacher or parent, you can keep 4-year-olds interested in animals by playing games outside that show them what it's like to be an animal. At the same time, you can have them engaged in games that get them moving and using their imaginations.
  1. Animal Walks

    • Have the kids line up side by side and position yourself at the opposite side. Start by calling out the name of an animal they all know of, such as a dog. The 4-year-olds all have to mimic the walk of a dog as they move toward you. Once they have finished their walks, have them go back and repeat the process with a new animal. To make the game more challenging, show them a range of animal moves before you start. Call out the more challenging animal names during the game to see if the kids can remember the move.

    Eatin' Like Piggies

    • To show 4-year-olds how messy pigs can be when they eat, play this game. Gather up several bowls and fill them with a gelatin dessert. Line the kids up side by side. Place the bowls on the ground outside, about 6 feet away from the kids' line. When you say "Oink!" the kids all race to the bowl directly opposite them and start to eat the dessert without using their hands. The first child done wins the game.

    It's A Zoo!

    • Assign each 4-year-old an animal and demonstrate the sound that animal makes. Give every two players the same animal. Make sure no one tells anyone their assigned animals. Start the game by spreading out all the children randomly outside. When ready, tell all the players to start making their animal noises. The kids all try to find their animal pairs until everyone has linked up.

    Animal Hunt

    • Scatter several plastic animal figures outside, hiding them behind bushes and trees. Make sure you have enough of every one animal for every child. For example, if you have four kids playing, hide four horse figures, four lion figures and so on. Start the game by gathering the kids in a circle. Tell them you want them to find an animal that does a certain thing, such as "roar" or "gallop." The children all race around to find the animal that does this. Once they have all found the correct animals, play another round with a new animal.
