How to Make Dominoes Out of Acrylic

Dominoes are simple blocks used to play a basic set of games all over the world. Like cards, dominoes can be used to play counting, matching or strategy games. Historically, dominoes evolved from dice. The numbers in a standard double-six domino set depict all possible combinations that can be rolled with two, six-sided dice. Dominoes originated in China in the 12th century. By the late 1700s, they were being played throughout Europe and later, in America. While dominoes are easy to find and play with, you can make your own set from white or any other color of acrylic material.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of a domino, and transfer the measurements to a sheet of 1/4-inch thick acrylic in white or another color that you like. Mark out a row equal to the width of the domino on your acrylic sheet with a dry erase marker and a straight edge. Make marks at the appropriate length increments to fill the row with dominoes. Make four rows containing seven dominoes each, or two rows containing 14 dominoes each, for a total of 28 dominoes.

    • 2

Use a table saw to cut out all 28 dominoes. Sand the edges smooth with 150-grit sandpaper. Wipe away the sanding residue with a clean cotton cloth.

    • 3

Draw a straight line with a permanent marker across the width in the center of one side of each domino.

    • 4

Fill the dominoes with dots in ascending fashion starting with no dots on either side of the line on the first domino and working up to six dots on either side of the line on the 28th domino. Use another set of dominoes, or an image of a standard set from a website like Domino-games.com, as a guide for creating the dots on your homemade set.

Spray the marked side of your dominoes with a clear acrylic waterproof sealant to protect them from fading over time.
