Games for Good Communication Skills for Children

Many children enjoy playing games at home and at school. Games can also help children learn how to communicate with one another while having fun at the same time. Organize communication games for children that allow them to give directions, share ideas and listen. Some games require the children to communicate one on one, while others require a group of children to work together.
  1. Introductions

    • Break the ice at the start of a party or gathering by asking the children to sit in a circle. Tell the children to select a player sitting beside him to be his partner. Make sure each child has a partner. Ask the children to introduce themselves to their partners and share three interesting facts with each other. Have each child stand up and introduce his partner to the class. To make the activity more challenging, tell the children they cannot talk during the introduction. They must use actions to introduce their partner.

    Building

    • Give the group two or three decks of cards. When you say ̶0;Go,̶1; they must build a tower using the cards. This activity will teach the children to communicate with one another and listen in order to achieve a common goal. For a game, divide the children into groups of three or four and give each team two decks of cards. The team with the tallest standing tower after 15 minutes wins the game. Another idea is to see who has the strongest structure instead of the tallest structure.

    Comic Strips

    • Divide the children into groups of three or four. Give each group a pencil and a sheet of paper. Tell the groups they must work together to make a comic strips. Each person in the group must make one frame of the comic strip. According to Games for Groups, there should be a lot of communication during this activity. Give the teams 20 minutes to finish. After 20 minutes, have each team share its comic strip with the group. Award prizes for the best and funniest comic strips.

    Secrets

    • Play a game of secrets to strengthen listening and communication skills. Divide the children into two teams and have each team sit on the floor in a circle. Whisper a statement like ̶0;The more you listen, the better you can communicate with your friends̶1; into the ear of one player from each team. They must pass the secret around the circle by whispering in the ear of the player next to them. The first team to get the correct statement all the way around the circle wins the game. Make the game more challenging by telling the children they can only whisper the secret one time.
