Preschool Rope Activities

Keeping preschoolers busy and occupied is quite a challenge sometimes with their short attention spans. When teaching a group of preschoolers or looking for something for your preschoolers to do at home, you can organize a variety of activities for them to do using ropes. Rope activities can keep the little ones busy for hours with games that provide high-quality fitness exercises.
  1. Balance Activities

    • Lay a large rope on the ground and tell your preschoolers to walk the rope like a tightrope walker. See who can walk the rope without falling off. Tell him to put his hands out to the side to help him balance. Make the activity harder by laying the rope in a zigzag pattern or in a circle. Other challenges for the preschoolers include having them walk the rope backwards or balance a beanbag on their head while walking the rope.

    Obstacle Course

    • Create a rope obstacle course for your preschoolers. Simply tie several ropes between chairs at different heights, draw boxes on the ground using ropes and lay rope on the ground in a straight line. The preschoolers must jump over the ropes, step in and out of the rope boxes, crawl under the ropes and balance on the ropes lying on the ground. Hang ropes with a loop tied on the end from trees and have the preschoolers toss beanbags through the loops. Time each preschooler, and the player with the fastest time wins the game.

    Jumping Activities

    • For a basic jumping activity, lay a rope on the ground and have the children jump over the rope. Tell them to see how many tricks they can do while jumping over the rope. For example, have them jump over the rope backwards or with their eyes closed. As they become more advanced, show the preschoolers how to jump rope by themselves. You can also show them how to have two people holding the ends of the jump rope while one player jumps in the middle.

    Tag Games

    • Cut pieces of small rope approximately 12 inches in length. Have each preschooler place the end of the rope in the back of his pants to create a ̶0;tail.̶1; When you say ̶0;Go,̶1; the players must try to take the tails from other players by grabbing them. If a player loses his tail, he is out of the game. The last player with his tail still attached wins the game. Alternatively, lay two ropes on the ground parallel from one another about 10 feet apart. Select one player to be ̶0;it̶1; and have him stand in the middle of the ropes. All other players must stand on the outside of the ropes. Call out ̶0;Race,̶1; and the players must run to the other side without ̶0;it̶1; tagging them. If ̶0;it̶1; tags a player, he is out of the game. The last player remaining is ̶0;it̶1; for the next game.
