Dodgeball Instructions

Many Americans grow up playing dodgeball in school. It is a simple game that can be set up in a gym or outside in the backyard. Each player is playing for himself and for the team, and it is a game that uses quick coordination. The game can be started with as little as four players and several soft playground balls, and grow to include several dozen players and balls. There are also many different versions that can alter the basic rules. The object of the game is to not get eliminated, and the last person standing is the winner.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a cone or marker in the playing area to divide the area in half: one team on one side, the other on the opposite side. If you are playing on a hard surface, chalk or masking tape can also be used to create this center line.

    • 2

Set another cone or marker 10 feet away from the center line as an attack line. Set the third cone or marker 10 feet away from the center in the opposite direction as an attack line from the other side. Mark an end line, however far away is convenient or desired, on both sides with another cone or marker on each side.

    • 3

Place the four playground balls side by side on the center line. Be sure they are evenly spaced to begin. Players start by standing at the end line. There should be an even number of players on either team in the beginning of the game.

    • 4

Blow a whistle to start the game. The players should rush up and grab a ball from the center line, without crossing into the other side's territory.

    • 5

Instruct players to only throw the balls when they are on their attack line from their side. If they hit another player, that player is eliminated. If a player catches a ball that is thrown at them, without the ball hitting the ground first, the player who threw the ball is out.

    • 6

Explain to players that they cannot cross the center line, and they can pick up any stray balls on the ground on their side to throw from the attack box.
