Little Red Riding Hood Activities & Crafts for Preschoolers

Charles Perrault published ̶0;Little Red Riding Hood̶1; in his book of eight short stories in 1697. Many preschoolers find the story intriguing and can enjoy participating in a variety of themed activities about the story. From games to crafts, you can prepare hands-on activities to teach the children about the many aspects of the story. Crafts and games also allow young children to build and improve fine motor skills.
  1. Coloring Activities

    • Print pictures from the story of ̶0;Little Red Riding Hood̶1; for your preschoolers to color. Make stick puppets by helping the children cut pictures of the characters out of the coloring pages. Glue the pictures to wood craft sticks to make stick puppets. Help the preschoolers glue pictures of the characters onto empty toilet paper rolls. This will allow the characters to stand up. They can also glue pictures of the characters onto small paper sacks to make hand puppets.

    Safety Activities

    • Read the story of ̶0;Little Red Riding Hood̶1; to your preschool class. Discuss the danger of strangers and child abduction. Explain key safety issues for children around day-care, school, home or in a public place. Ask the children what they think Little Red Riding Hood could have done differently to avoid what happened. Have a group discussion about the different methods Little Red Riding Hood could have used during her encounter with the Big Bad Wolf.

    Play Activities

    • Allow the preschoolers to role-play the entire story. Select a child to play Little Red Riding Hood, the wolf and grandma. Let each preschooler have a chance to play a role in the story. After everyone has a turn, have the preschoolers make up their own version of the story. For example, tell the children to make up a safe version of Little Red Riding Hood. Make a wolf mask, grandma mask and use a red sheet for Little Red Riding Hood's costume. Alternatively, split the preschoolers into two groups. Have one group act out the original version of the story and the other group act out a safe version of the story.

    Other Activities

    • Other activities include a grandma̵7;s house craft and a shoebox craft. Cut the top off several half-gallon milk cartons and give one to each preschooler. The preschoolers can use paint or markers to color the house. Have them glue the house to a piece of cardboard or poster board. They can also make a shoebox craft scene using the toilet paper roll characters. Have the children tape the characters in the shoebox and draw a trail using a marker. Have them place Little Red Riding Hood on the trail, the wolf along the trail and grandma in her bed at her house.
