Team Building Activity for the Fourth Grade

Team building activities are important for fourth graders, as they're eager for social acceptance. Teach the students about communication, teamwork and leadership through a variety of team building activities. Team building activities will also help children learn social interaction skills that they will need throughout life. With a few supplies and some creativity, your students can learn how to work together while having fun at the same time.
  1. Hula-Hoop Activities

    • Teach children how to work together by having them stand in a circle and hold hands. Walk up in between two students and unlock their hands. Place a hula-hoop on one of their arms and ask them to rejoin hands. The students must pass the hula-hoop all the way around the circle without letting go of each other̵7;s hands. Turn this activity into a game by having two teams race to see who can do this in the fastest amount of time. Make it more challenging by adding more than one hoop.

    Balloon Activities

    • Inflate several balloons and have the students stand in a circle. Give them the balloons and have them hit the balloons in the air. Tell them to spread out and separate the balloons by color while still hitting the balloons in the air. They must work together to get the balloons separated by color. Mark off an area with tape or rope and tell the students that they can't go outside the line. Have two teams compete against one another to see who can complete this activity in the fastest amount of time. Alternatively, have one team try to beat their fastest time.

    Treasure Hunt Activities

    • Create a treasure hunt for the students by writing down a series of clues that lead to a treasure. Make an indoor hunt in the classroom or an outdoor hunt on the playground. Have the children participate in two separate teams or as one team. Divide the students into two teams and have a race to see which team can find the treasure first. Tell the students that they must work together to find the treasure.

    Gutter Activities

    • Use several pieces of 2-inch plastic gutter or half pipe in a variety of lengths. Give each player a piece and give the team a marble. Place an empty cup on the ground and mark a starting line 20 feet from the cup. The players must work together to make a long gutter that the marble will travel down to fall in the cup. Alternatively, use water instead of a marble and have the students fill up the cup with water. Make it a race between two teams to see who can fill up the cup with water in the fastest amount of time.
