Simple Ball Activities to Do With Preschoolers

Preschoolers can learn hand-to-eye coordination and gross motor skills by participating in a variety of simple ball activities. Prepare activities to get the preschoolers up and moving, as well as having fun. From throwing to catching to kicking balls, activities can keep a group of preschoolers busy for hours of excitement.
  1. Circle Activities

    • Have the preschoolers sit in a circle with their feet together and then roll a ball to one another. Use a soccer ball or a volleyball for this activity. After they do this for about five minutes, have them stand up and toss the ball to one another. Have them count as they toss the ball to see how many times they can toss the ball before dropping it. As the activity gets easier, have each preschooler take a giant step backwards so they have to toss the ball and catch the ball from a farther distance.

    Ball Catch Activities

    • Make a ball catch using a plunger and a soft sponge ball. Use a large needle to thread string down the center of the ball and tie the excess string around the plunger̵7;s handle. The string should have about three feet in between the ball and the plunger. Preschoolers must hold the plunger by the handle and try to flip the ball into the open end of the plunger. Create a game out of this activity by making two ball catchers and have a race to see who can get the ball in the plunger first.

    Beach Ball Activities

    • Hang a rope between two poles or trees and allow the preschoolers to hit a beach ball over the rope. Tell them to hit the ball back and forth and try to keep it from hitting the ground. Create a relay race by dividing the children into two teams. Have each team line up in a single file line and give the first player in each team line a beach ball. The children must pass the beach ball over their heads and under their legs all the way down the line. The first team to finish wins the activity.

    Obstacle Course Activities

    • Create a ball obstacle course for your preschoolers. Set up different sections, such as throwing a ball as far as possible, rolling a ball into empty plastic bottles to try to knock them down and tossing balls through hula-hoops hanging from a tree. Have them race through the ball obstacle course for fun or time each player to see who has the fastest time. If you have enough materials, make two identical courses and have them race side-by-side.
