Five-Minute Activities for Grades Four to Six

Fill small pockets of time, like before the class ends or in between lesson plans, in a classroom with 5-minute activities. These classroom activities are perfect for 4th through 6th graders. Put an educational twist on the activities so the children are still learning while having fun at the same time. All you need are a few supplies and some activity ideas to plan 5-minute activities for your class.
  1. Circle Activities

    • Have the students sit in a circle and give each student a different fruit name, such as apple, strawberry, peach and kiwi. Ask one student to stand in the middle of the circle. He must yell out the name of a fruit three times like "peach, peach, peach." The student who is "peach" must yell "peach," before the player in the middle finishes saying it three times. If he succeeds, the player in the middle must call out another fruit. If not, that player must go to the middle and yell a type of fruit three times. This game improves students' concentration and tests their reaction skills. Alternatively, play this game with colors or shapes instead of fruits.

    Line Up Activities

    • Teach students teamwork and communication skills with quick line up activities. Call out a category like height or birthday. The students must line up as quickly as possible in order from least to greatest depending on their height or their birthday. For a game, split the students into two teams and see which team can do this activity in the fastest amount of time. Other categories include shoe size, hair length and alphabetical order by name.

    Art Activities

    • Give each student an index card and set a timer for two minutes. Tell the students they have two minutes to draw their favorite animal on the card. After two minutes, each student must share her favorite animal and tell why it is her favorite. If this is an end of the day activity, have the students draw a picture to represent one thing they learned in class that day and share. This will encourage students to pay close attention to lessons during the day.

    Memory Activities

    • Strengthen the memory of your fourth through sixth graders with a few memory activities. Place 10 pictures on a bulletin board of random objects, like countries the students learned about or states. Have the children look at the pictures and then place their head on their desks with their eyes closed. Remove one picture from the board. The first student to look up and tell you what picture is missing wins the activity.
