How to Build the Perfect Snow Fort for Kids

When it's cold outside -- and the snow has fallen -- it can be hard to get the motivation to go out. Kids today are prone to stay indoors with their electronic entertainment when the temperature drops. But, there is a way to encourage healthy play time with a family activity that creates memories for years to come. Help your kids build a snow fort in the backyard or a field. Make a traditional bonding experience on the first snowfall of every year.

  • Shovel
  • Large metal spoon
  • Tarpaulin
  • Heavy rocks (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your location. Whether it's in your front or backyard or an open field, pick a place that's level. Uneven areas are more difficult to build on.

    • 2

Mark out the location of the fort and agree on a game plan. Use the edge of your shovel to draw a circle in the snow.

    • 3
Try to make the snowballs knee-high on an adult.

Start rolling snowballs. You'll need several large snowballs that are at least knee high (on an adult) for the bottom row of your fort. Once they're large enough, roll them over to the fort site and place them on the circle you drew with your shovel. Make sure to leave free space on the opening of the circle for a doorway into the fort.

    • 4

Roll a second layer of balls and make your fort's second layer. These should be smaller than the first balls because they have to be liftable. You'll lift each ball up and place it on top of and in between the snowballs in your first row. Don't cover up your doorway.

    • 5

Roll a third row of snowballs, smaller than the second row, and place them in the same manner in step 4 on top of the second row.

    • 6

Continue to build your fort by adding rows, each with balls smaller than the previous row, until the fort is to your desired height.

    • 7

Fill in your holes. Use extra snow from the ground to pack in any holes that are between your snowballs on the fort.

    • 8

Make windows in the fort. Once your snow is packed and the space in between the balls is filled in, you'll have a pretty solid wall. Dig out small windows in the wall. You can start the digging by using a large metal spoon. Use the windows to watch your "enemies" approach your fort.

    • 9

Place the Tarpaulin over the top of your fort for a roof. Use snowballs or heavy rocks to hold it in place.

    • 10

Make a "floor" in your fort. Lay down a layer of straw on your fort then lay down old blankets to keep the floor of your fort warm when you're convening inside.
