Paper Activities
Print a variety of paper activities for the preschoolers to do at home, including word searches, coloring pages, bug mazes and bug bingo. Preschoolers can play a game of bug bingo using plastic bugs as bingo markers. Print pictures of bugs in the bingo squares. Show the pictures and call out the names of bugs. Have the preschoolers mark their cards using the plastic bugs. The first preschooler to bingo and yell "Bugs" instead of bingo wins the game.
Memory Activities
Build preschoolers' memory skills by playing a few bug memory games. Print pictures of bugs and show them to the children. Hang four pictures on a wall and have the children close their eyes. Remove one picture and ask the children to look back at the pictures. The first child to tell you the bug that is missing wins the game. Another idea is to print two small pictures of each bug and place the pictures face down. Have the children try to find bug pairs. If a child finds a matching pair, she can keep it and goes again. If it is not a matching pair, the turn moves to the next player. The child with the most bug matches wins the game.
Songs and Rhymes
Teach your preschoolers a few bug-themed songs. Sing "The fuzzy caterpillar, curled up on a leaf, spun her little chrysalis, and then fell asleep. While she was sleeping, she dreamed that she could fly, and later when she woke up, she was a butterfly," to the tune of Itsy Bitsy Spider. Teach the children the nursery rhyme "Little Miss Muffet," which reads "Little Miss Muffet, sat on her tuffet, eating her curds and whey, along came a spider, who sat down beside her, and frightened Miss Muffet away."
Craft Activities
Allow the preschoolers to make bug crafts using an assortment of craft supplies, such as chenille stems, googly eyes, craft foam, glue and craft pompoms. Tell the children to use their imagination to make funny, scary and silly bugs. Another idea is to give the children self-hardening clay to sculpt a bug. Allow the bugs to harden overnight and let the children paint the bugs using acrylic paint. The children will have a bug keepsake to keep for themselves or give away as a gift.
