Memory Games
Students can learn about different types of insects by playing memory games. Print several pictures of insects, two of each, on slips of paper. Laminate the slips of paper to make them more durable. Place the cards face down on a desk, and have the students play a game of memory match. One student turns over two cards. If they match, he keeps the pair and tries again. If not, he flips them back over and the next player takes his turn. The player with the most matches wins the game. Alternatively, use a picture of an insect on one card and the name of the insect on another card.
Contests
Have contests to see which fourth-grader can draw, paint or sculpt the best insect. Hang a picture of an insect, such as a grasshopper or cricket, on the wall. The students must make a freehand drawing of the insect on a sheet of paper. Another idea is to have them paint the insect. Give each student a tub of playdough to use to sculpt his favorite insect. The students can use googly eyes, chenille stems and beads for added decoration when creating their insects. Award prizes to the best, funniest, silliest and most creative insects.
Scavenger Hunts
Hide several plastic insects around the classroom, and have a hunt to see who can find the most insects in two minutes. Another idea is to call out the name of an insect, and the first student to find that type of insect wins a prize. Make the scavenger hunt more of a challenge by calling out "pollinator" or "beneficial insect." The students compete to win a prize by being the first one to find and identify a beneficial insect or pollinator.
Other Games
Other games include insect bingo or a tossing game. Print bingo cards with pictures of different insects in each square. Call out the name of an insect and have the students mark their cards using plastic insects. The first player to bingo and yell "Insects" wins a prize. For a tossing game, cut several holes out of the bottom of a cardboard box. Write names of insects around each hole. Have your students toss plastic insects into the corresponding holes on the box.
