Things You'll Need
Instructions
Draw a racetrack on a sheet of graph paper using a black marker, or let your child draw it. It should be a complete loop with a start/finish line somewhere on the track. Add curves and sharp bends of a challenging race, or draw gentle corners for an easy race.
Color in the squares outside of the track with the marker so it is clear where the walls and corners are.
Assign a color to each player (up to six) and distribute a matching colored pencil or crayon to each person. Have each player draw an X on the starting line, which represents her car. Cars should always be positioned at an intersection of two lines.
Roll the dice to determine how far the first player can move. The player can move up, down, left or right for each point on the dice. For example, rolling a two would allow a player to move two spaces up and zero left, one up and one left, or zero up and two left. To move, draw a new X with the player's color where the car will end up, and draw a line leading from the player's previous X to the new one.
Repeat Step 4 for each player, taking turns until the first person makes it to the finish line and wins. Crashing into cars or walls of the track can be punished by losing a turn.
Develop your own family rules after learning the basics of the game. You can add in math problems by having children roll twice and add their rolls to determine their move. You can incorporate traps and oil slicks that must be avoided, or you can add car upgrades to your game that can allow players to move farther, avoid oil slicks better or crash into walls without damage.
