Dental Activities for the Classroom

Healthy dental hygiene is an important part of any child's daily routine. When teaching the children about proper dental hygiene, allow them to participate in entertaining activities like games and crafts. Activities give the children a chance to have fun in the classroom while learning about a healthy habit at the same time. Entice the children to try their best by awarding toothbrushes and toothpaste for a job well done.
  1. Paper Games

    • Make a word search with words like toothbrush, decay, cavity, hygiene, healthy, plaque and sealant. Give each student a word search and have him find the words. Turn this activity into a contest by awarding a prize to the child who can find all the words in the least amount of time. Another paper game is a word scramble. Write the word "toothbrush" on a board. Tell the children to write down as many words as they can using the letters from the word toothbrush. The student with the most correct words at the end of two minutes wins the activity.

    Painting Activities

    • Have the children cut a tooth shape out of yellow construction paper and paint the tooth white to "clean it." Allow children to use dental floss to paint a picture. Place paint on paper plates and have children dip the dental floss into the paint. They can dangle the dental floss onto the paper to create different designs. Challenge the children to write their names on the paper. Students can also use toothbrushes dipped in paint to create a picture.

    Crafts

    • Give each child a small box with a lid available at your local craft store and online. Children can paint the box and decorate it using stickers. Have them write "Tooth Fairy Box" on it with paint pens. They can put each tooth they lose in the box for the tooth fairy. Make a tooth fairy jar using an empty and clean baby food jar. The children can paint the jar and sprinkle glitter on it for decoration. After the paint dries, have the children sculpt a tooth shape out of white self-hardening clay and press onto the jar. The clay will dry overnight and the children will have a tooth fairy keepsake jar.

    Singing Activities

    • Teach your children songs that go along with the tune "Row, row, row your boat." One song goes "Brush, brush, brush your teeth, at least two times a day, cleaning, cleaning, cleaning, fighting tooth decay." The other song goes to the same tune and reads "Brush, brush, brush your teeth, brush them every day, up and down and round and round, scrub the germs away." For added fun, give each child a toothbrush and have her do the motions of brushing her teeth while singing the songs.
