Board Game Marathons
Break out a variety of board games for an afternoon of fun. Ideas include The Game of Life, Monopoly, Clue, Candy Land, Battleship and Scrabble. Depending on how many people are involved, you can set up "stations" for each game or come up with a tournament system, such as the winners of two different games then playing each other in another game. Set up the games in an area of the home such as the living room, or put blankets out in your backyard to give the game playing a "picnic" feel.
Gardening Fun
Another option is to have your children help you set up a vegetable garden. Give them child-size hoes and shovels for digging, and explain each vegetable you are planting as well as what makes it a healthy food. Allow the kids to take turns digging holes for planting and then filling the holes with seeds. You can also help them make "markers" for each row of vegetables, such as a small sign that reads "Carrots" with a picture of a carrot on it.
Sports Activities
Set up a badminton or volleyball net for afternoon games, or try setting up soccer nets or an area for croquet. Break out the mitts and baseballs/softballs for catch, or simply throw a lightweight ball back and forth. Wiffle ball is another option, or a game of kickball if you have the space. Practice playing touch football, or play "PIG" or "HORSE" if you have a basketball net on your property. Two-on-two basketball games are also an option.
Crafts
A final option for things to do with kids on the weekends at home is assorted craft projects. Teach kids about the importance of recycling through various crafts made with recycled materials, such as animals made from toilet paper rolls. Paint the rolls in the colors of a certain animal, such as black and white for a dairy cow, and use card stock to make a face, appendages and tail. Other craft ideas include making barrettes with assorted beads, sequins and plain barrettes or barrette backs, or braiding embroidery floss in different colors to make friendship bracelets.
