Things You'll Need
Instructions
Research what materials are recyclable in your area so that you can provide your children with the most accurate information possible. For example, some cities have developed technology that recycles Styrofoam. However, this service is only available in certain locations.
Teach children about which materials are recyclable by creating an imaginary home recycling center. Explain that the state returns money to consumers who bring their cans and bottles to recycling drop-off locations. Tell children that because recycling is so important, you will also be rewarding them for their efforts to help the environment.
Collect and clean empty containers from your household. Place them in a bin in your kitchen. Be sure to include both recyclable and non-recyclable items, such as chip bags and foam containers. This will allow children to differentiate between recyclables and trash.
Show your children the location of your family recycling bin and teach them how to differentiate it from the trashcan. Tell them that they will receive a nickel for each item they successfully recycle.
Monitor children as they sort the materials in the bin between trash and recycling. Reward them with a nickel whenever they successfully recycle an item. Children will associate recycling with positive reinforcement and reward, and will think of it as a daily activity that is important and fun.
