Raspberry Fruit Activities for Children

Use the bountiful summertime raspberry to educate and delight children. Children can participate in picking and eating raspberries, and can learn about the nutritional qualities of the berries and how to use them in baking. Some of the activities can be done by children on their own, and others, such as those in the kitchen, require some adult supervision.
  1. Picking

    • The classic childhood pastime of picking berries is still an activity that children can do with raspberries. Raspberries are a perennial plant, so children will know the places to look for berries year after year. Raspberries generally grow during the summer months between July and September, and children should pick them when they are a bright red color and plump.

    Preparing

    • Children can learn to bake with raspberries and even make them into jams and jellies. These activities should be done with adult supervision, since children will generally need to use hot ovens and stoves. Baked goods such as pies, muffins and tarts can be made with raspberries, and raspberry jams and jellies are made by adding sugar and gelatin to the berries.

    Learning

    • Learning activities can be played with the use of raspberries. Children can color pictures of raspberries and discuss the nutritional benefits of the berries. Teach children that raspberries are a good source of vitamins C and E, and are also a good source of fiber. Raspberries can be a sweet treat, so teach children that they can eat the berries as a light and sweet dessert.

    Festivals

    • Raspberry festivals can be found across the country. Find out if there's a festival in your town or close by, and take children to participate in the raspberry activities. Utah holds the Bear Lake Raspberry Days in August, and Washington has a Raspberry Festival in July, for example. Look into places like these where you can make your children's summer vacations even sweeter.
