Activities With Legos for Kids

Founded in 1932, the Lego group provides a variety of building blocks for children. The blocks allow children a chance to express their imagination and show off their creativity. Whether you are planning a Lego-themed birthday party or looking to keep bored children busy, create a few activities using the bright-colored building blocks. Encourage the children to try their best by awarding Lego sets and stickers to each game winner.
  1. Contests

    • Create building contests for the children to show off their building skills. Give each child a bag of Lego blocks. Each bag needs to have the same amount and type of blocks. Have contests to see who can build the tallest tower, longest bridge or biggest house in 10 minutes. Another idea is to give the children 10 minutes to build any creation. Award prizes to the best and most creative creations.

    Tossing Activities

    • Scatter several colored buckets on the ground. Mark a line 10 feet from the buckets and have the children try to toss the blocks into the buckets. Write a point value on each bucket and the child who earns the most points wins the game. Alternatively, have the children toss the blocks into the corresponding colored bucket. Each child earns 10 points for each correct toss. The child with the most points wins the game.

    Guessing Activities

    • Place several Lego blocks on a tray, one of each color. Place the tray on a table, and tell the children to look closely at the Lego blocks. Take the tray out of the room, and remove one block. When you bring the tray back in the room, the first child to tell you what color is missing from the tray wins the game. Another guessing activity is to fill a large clear jar with a variety of Lego blocks. Have each child write his name and a guess as to how many blocks are in the jar on a sheet of paper. The child that guesses closest to the correct number of Lego blocks in the jar wins the jar of blocks.

    Lego Chopsticks

    • Another game is Lego chopsticks. Take two long, thin Lego pieces and use a rubber band to bind them together to make chopsticks. Place a bowl of Lego blocks on the table and an empty bowl. The children must use the Lego chopsticks to pick up the blocks to transfer to the empty bowl. The child who transfers the most blocks wins the game.

    Scavenger Hunt

    • Create a scavenger hunt by hiding the blocks all over the play area. Call out a color, and the child who finds the most blocks in that color wins a prize.
