How to Make a Hopscotch Board

Hopscotch is one of the most basic outdoor activities, according to Step Up 4 Change, and the game was written about as early as 1677. Today, the game helps younger children with motor skills as well as counting. You create a traditional hopscotch board by drawing it out with chalk on the pavement. Or you can make a hopscotch board indoors by drawing or painting on a large sheet of butcher paper. Use primed canvas if you want a board that will last longer.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw out three connected squares, each measuring about 12 inches square. These squares need to be right above one another. Write a "1" in the bottom square, "2" in the middle square and "3" in the top square.

    • 2

Draw a line directly above the center of the "3" square. The line should measure about 12 inches, or the same length as the sides of the first three squares you drew. Draw one square to the left of this line, using the line as its right side, and label it "4." Draw a second square to the right of the line, using the line as its left side, and label it "5."

    • 3

Center another square directly above the "4" and "5" squares. This square needs to be the same size as the rest of the squares and should line up with the "1," "2" and "3" squares. Label this square "6."

    • 4

Draw two more squares directly above the "6" square, as you did in Step 2. Label the left square "7" and the right square "8."

    • 5

Draw another square so it is directly above the center of the "7" and "8" squares, as you did in Step 3. Label this square "9."

    • 6

Draw a semicircle directly above the "9" square, with its base centered on that square. The base of the semicircle should be as wide as the two-square layouts, or about 24 inches. Write the number "10" in the semicircle.
